THE CREATION
When God made the Earth
and sky,
the flowers and the trees,
He then made all the animals
the fish, the birds, the bees.
And when at last he
finished
not one was quite the same,
he said, "I'll walk this world of mine
and give each one a name"
And so he traveled fare
and wide
and everywhere he went,
a little creature followed him
until it's strength was spent
when all were named upon
the Earth
and in the sky and sea,
the little creature said "Dear Lord,
there's not one left for me"
Kindly the father said to
him
"I've left you to the end,
I've turned my own name back to front
and called you dog, my friend"

Wolves are not our brothers; they are not our subordinates, either. They are
another nation, caught up just like us in the complex web of time and life -
Henry Beston

The Wolves and the Sheepdogs
The WOLVES thus addressed the Sheepdogs: "Why should you, who are
like us in so many things, not be entirely of one mind with us,
and live with us as brothers should? We differ from you in one
point only. We live in freedom, but you bow down to and slave
for men, who in return for your services flog you with whips and
put collars on your necks. They make you also guard their sheep,
and while they eat the mutton throw only the bones to you. If
you will be persuaded by us, you will give us the sheep, and we
will enjoy them in common, till we all are surfeited." The Dogs
listened favorably to these proposals, and, entering the den of
the Wolves, they were set upon and torn to pieces.
Chief Dan George
"If you talk to the animals, they will talk to you

If you do not talk to them, you will not know them;
and what you do not know you will fear.
What one fears, one destroys."

What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, men would die
from great loneliness of spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, soon
happens to man. All things are connected.
Humankind has
not woven the
web of life.
We are but one
thread within it.
Whatever we do
to the web, we do
to ourselves.
All things are bound
together. All
things connect.

"We
need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote
from universal nature, and living by complicated artifice, man in civilisation
surveys the creatures through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a
feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronise them for their
incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below
ourselves. And therein we err, we greatly err. For the animals shall not be
measured by man. In a world older and more complete, gifted with extension of
the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear.
They are not brethren, they are not underlings. They are other nations, caught
with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour
and travail of the earth"
Henry Beston

Protect

And bring

A Mouse Story

A mouse looked through a crack in the wall to see
the farmer and his wife opening a package. What food
might it contain? He was aghast to discover that it
was a mouse trap. Retreating to the farmyard, the
mouse proclaimed the warning: "There is a mouse trap
in the house, there is a mouse trap in the house.
"The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head
and said, "Mr. Mouse, I can tell you this is a grave
concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I
cannot be bothered by it."
The mouse turned to the pig and told him, "There
is a mouse trap in the house." "I am so very sorry
Mr. Mouse," sympathized the pig, "but there is
nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured that
you are in my prayers."
The mouse turned to the cow. She said, "Like wow,
Mr. Mouse. A mouse trap. I am in grave danger. Duh?"
So the mouse returned to the house, head down and
dejected to face the farmer's mouse trap alone. That
very night a sound was heard throughout the house,
like the sound of a mouse trap catching its prey.
The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught.
In the darkness, she did not see that it was a
venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The
snake bit the farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her
to the hospital. She returned home with a fever. Now
everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken
soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard
for the soup's main ingredient.
His wife's sickness continued so that friends and
neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To
feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer's
wife did not get well. She died, and so many people
came for her funeral the farmer had the cow
slaughtered to provide meat for all of them to eat.
So the next time you hear that someone is facing a
problem and think that it does not concern you,
remember that when the least of us is threatened, we
are all at risk. In the book of Genesis, Cain said
about Abel his brother to our God "Am I my Brother's
keeper? "We are all involved in the "spiritual
warfare." We must all have a keen eye out one for
another and be willing to make that extra care and
encouragement to each other.

An Eternal Companion
"The depth of attachment people have
for their cats is best exemplified by a case I have in mind. This cat
belonged to a lonely, elderly widow who had made the provision in her will
that the cat was to be buried with her. It happened that the cat died before
she did, so she had the body placed in a casket and sent to the receiving
vault of a pet cemetery. I advised that she check with her state health
authorities to see if it was permissible to have her cat placed in the
coffin with her. Of course, the answer was no, in a vein that would indicate
the lady to be - at the very least - a bit peculiar. For two year, her mind
worked on a way to beat the authorities. When she was convinced she had
solved the problem, she called me to have the cat cremated - with the
provision that the ashes be returned to her. I did as she asked, then
requested the favor of being let in on her plans for them. I got the answer,
all right: she had sewn the ashes inside the hem of her wedding dress in
which she was to be buried. She died happily, knowing that her final request
had been granted."

A Dog's Prayer
Treat me kindly, my
beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness
than the loving heart of me. Do not break my spirit with a stick, for thought
should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will
more quickly teach me the things you would have me do. Speak to me often, for
your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging
of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear. When it is cold and
wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used
to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at
your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you
through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in
all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshipper. Keep my pan
filled with fresh water, for though I would not reproach you were it dry, I
cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well
to romp and play, and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready,
willing, and able to protect you with my life should yours be in danger. And, my
beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my sight or
hearing, do not turn away from me. Rather, hold me in your gentle arms as
skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you
knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands. ~

Dog Owner's Prayer
O Lord don't let me once forget
how I love my trusty pet.
Help me learn to disregard
canine craters in my yard.
Show me how to be a buddy
even when my sofa's muddy.
Don't allow my pooch to munch
postal carriers for lunch.
Shield my neighbor's cat from view—
guide my steps around the doo.
Train me not to curse and scowl
when it's puppy's night to howl.
Grant I shan't awake in fear
with a cold nose in my ear.
Give me patience without end—
Help me be 'A Dog's Best Friend'!
When I am Old...
I shall wear Turquoise
and soft gray sweatshirts...
and a bandana over my silver hair...
and I shall spend my Social Security Checks
on Sweet Wine and My Dogs...
and sit in my house on my well-worn chair,
and listen to my dog's breathing.
I will sneak out in the middle of a warm Summer night
and take my dogs for a run, if my old bones will allow...
and when people come to call,
I will smile and nod as I show them my dogs...
and talk of them and about them...
The Ones so Beloved of the Past
and the Ones so Beloved of Today....
I still will work hard cleaning after them
and mopping and feeding them
and whispering their names in a soft, loving way.
I will wear their gleaming drool on my throat like a jewel,
and I will be an embarrassment to all, and my family...
who have not yet found the peace in being free
to have dogs as your Best Friends....
These friends who always wait,
at any hour, for your footfall...
and eagerly jump to their feet out of a sound sleep,
to greet you as if you are a God.
With warm eyes full of adoring love
and hope that you will stay and hug their big, strong necks...
and kiss their dear sweet heads...
and whisper to them of your love and the
beautiful pleasure of their very special company....
I look in the Mirror...
and see I am getting old....
this is the kind of woman I am...
and have always been.
Loving dogs is easy, they are part of me,
accept me for who I am,
My dogs appreciate my presence in their lives...
When I am old this will be important to me...
you will understand when you are old....
and if you have dogs to love too.

Shane
Some of the most poignant moments I
spend as a veterinarian are those spent
with my clients assisting the transition of my animal patients from this
world to the next. When living
becomes a burden, whether from pain or loss
of normal functions, I can help a family by ensuring that their beloved pet
has an easy passing. Making this final decision is painful, and I have often
felt powerless to comfort the grieving owners.
That was before I met Shane.
I had been called to examine a ten-year-old blue heeler named Belker. The
dog's owners - Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane - were all
very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined
Belker and found he was dying of cancer.
I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to
perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made
arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the
four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt Shane could learn
something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family
surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time,
that I wondered if he understood what was going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed
to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat
together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad
fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been
listening quietly, piped up, "I know why." Startled, we all turned to him.
What came out of his mouth next stunned me - I'd never heard a more
comforting explanation.
He said, "Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a good life -
like loving everybody and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued,
"Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as
long."

Hodge the Cat
Burly and big, his books among,
Good Samuel Johnson sat,
With frowning brows and wig askew,
His snuff-strewn waistcoat far from new;
So stern and menacing his air,
That neither Black Sam,
nor the maid
To knock or interrupt him dare;
Yet close beside him, unafraid,
Sat Hodge, the cat.
"This participle," the Doctor wrote,
"The modern scholar cavils at,
But," - even as he penned the word,
A soft, protesting note was heard;
The Doctor fumbled with his pen,
The dawning thought took wings and flew,
The sound repeated, come again,
It was a faint, reminding "Mew!"
From Hodge, the cat...
The Dictionary was laid down,
The Doctor tied his vast cravat,
And down the buzzing street he strode,
Taking an often-trodden road,
And halted at a well-known stall:
"Fishmonger," spoke the Doctor gruff,
"Give me six oysters, that is all;
Hodge knows when he has had enough,
Hodge is my cat."
Then home; puss dined and while in sleep
he chased a visionary rat,
His master sat him down again,
Rewrote his page, renibbed his pen;
Each "i" was dotted, each "t" was crossed,
He labored on for all to read,
Nor deemed that time was waste or lost
Spent in supplying the small need
Of Hodge, the cat.
The dear old Doctor! Fierce of mien,
Untidy, arbitrary, fat,
What gentle thought his name enfold!
So generous of his scanty gold.
So quick to love, so hot to scorn,
Kind to all sufferers under heaven,
A tend'rer despot ne'er was born;
His big heart held a corner, even
For Hodge, the cat.

This Old Cat
I'm
getting on in years,
My coat is turning gray.
My eyes have lost their luster,
My hearing's just okay.
I spend my day dreaming
Of conquests in my past,
Lying near a sunny window
Waiting for its warm repast.
I
remember our first visit,
I was coming to you free,
Hoping you would take me in
And keep me company.
I wasn't young or handsome,
Two years I'd roamed the street.
There were scars upon my face,
I hobbled on my feet.
I
could sense your disappointment
As I left my prison cage.
Oh, I hoped you would accept me
And look beyond my age.
You took me out of pity,
I accepted without shame.
Then you grew to love me,
And I admit the same.
I
have shared with you your laughter,
You have wet my fur with tears.
We've come to know each other
Throughout these many years.
Just one more hug this morning
Before you drive away,
And know I'll think about you
Throughout your busy day.
The
time we've left together
Is a treasured time at that.
My heart is yours forever.
I Promise - This old cat.

A Cat's Prayer
Now I lay me down to sleep,
The king-size bed is soft and deep...
I sleep right in the center groove
My human can hardly move!
I've trapped her legs, she's tucked in tight
And here is where I pass the night
No one disturbs me or dares intrude
Till morning comes and "I want food!"
I sneak up slowly to begin
My nibbles on my human's chin.
She wakes up quickly, I have sharp teeth -
And my claws I will unsheath
For the morning's here and it's time to play
I always seem to get my way.
So thank you Lord for giving me
This human person that I see.
The one who hugs me and holds me tight
And sacrifices her bed at night.

IF I DIDN'T HAVE ANIMALS
I could walk around the yard barefoot in safety.
My house could be carpeted instead of tiled and laminated.
All flat surfaces, clothing, furniture, and cars would be free of
hair.
When the doorbell rings, it wouldn't sound like the kennels .
When the doorbell rings, I could get to the door without wading
through fuzzy bodies who beat me there.
I could sit on the couch the way I wanted, without taking into
consideration how much space several fur bodies would need to get
comfortable.
I would not have strange presents under my Christmas tree -- dog
bones, stuffed animals , nor would I have to answer to people why I
wrap them.
I would not be on a first-name basis with three veterinarians.
The most used words in my vocabulary would not be: out, sit, down,
come, no, stay, and leave him/her/it ALONE.
My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates or
barriers.
My pockets would not contain things like poop bags, treats and an
extra leash.
I would no longer have to spell the words B-A-L-L-, F-R-I-S-B-E-E,
or W-A-L-K.
I would not have as many leaves INSIDE my house as outside.
I would not look strangely at people who think having ONE dog ties
them down too much.
I'd look forward to spring and the melting of snow instead of
dreading mud season.
I would not have to answer the question Why do you have so many
dogs/animals from people who will never have the joy in their lives
of knowing they are loved unconditionally by something as close to
an angel as they will ever get.
How empty my life would be.
